Thousands of people across the UK live in HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) housing — shared houses with thin walls, shared kitchens, and little privacy. These homes are often the only affordable option for students, low-income workers, and vulnerable people.

But there’s one huge, ignored issue: chronic, unavoidable noise.

When your neighbour talks at night, listens to music, or even takes phone calls — and you share a thin wall — you hear everything. And unlike detached homes or council flats with decent insulation, HMO walls are paper-thin. You lose sleep, your mental health suffers, and you feel completely helpless.

❗ And the worst part?
Landlords can’t intervene unless it’s “extreme” or illegal
Local councils don’t act unless it’s very loud or antisocial
Tenants are told: “Just use earplugs” or “Nothing we can do”
And MPs? They’ve never lived like this, so they ignore it
😴 Losing sleep every night isn’t a small problem.
It’s a health issue. A stress issue. A mental health issue.
And we’re treated like it doesn’t matter because it’s not “technically illegal.”

 
What we’re demanding:
✅ Legal recognition of constant nighttime noise in HMOs as a quality-of-life issue — not just extreme cases.

✅ Minimum soundproofing standards for all licensed HMOs — especially in bedrooms with shared walls.

✅ New HMO licensing rules that take noise complaints seriously and give tenants real support.

✅ A government-funded noise insulation grant or support scheme for landlords willing to improve HMO conditions.

 
🗣️ This affects thousands of people. It’s time someone listened.
We’re not asking for luxury — we’re asking for basic sleep and peace of mind.
