I am writing this petition because I am deeply concerned about the ongoing trend of housing infill in our beloved neighborhoods here in Edmonton. My family and I, along with many of our neighbors, have cherished the tranquility and sense of community that comes with living in a neighborhood comprised primarily of single-family dwellings. Unfortunately, this cherished way of life is under threat due to the recent surge of housing infill projects.

Infill developments, which convert single-family homes into multi-family dwellings, are popping up around us at an alarming rate. They often come with entrances adjacent to existing properties, sacrificing our privacy and reducing our property's value. Furthermore, these developments lead to overcrowded streets, excessive on-street parking issues, and a general decline in neighborhood aesthetics. Our community, once a serene sanctuary, risks becoming a high-density nuisance zone.

But the concerns don't end there. The city has shockingly amended fire codes to accommodate these infill projects, which puts neighboring homes, tenants, and even our brave firefighters in harm's way. Imagine the chaos and destruction if a fire were to ignite in these densely packed developments. It’s a risk we simply cannot afford to take.

We understand and empathize with the need for urban growth and housing solutions; however, this should not come at the expense of existing residents' quality of life and safety. There are alternative solutions, such as promoting responsible urban development that respects existing neighborhood structures, enhancing infrastructure to support any new developments, and ensuring rigorous safety codes that do not compromise public safety.

We call upon the Edmonton city council and urban planners to re-evaluate and halt current housing infill projects in single-family neighborhoods. We urge them to prioritize the implementation of a thoughtful urban development plan that balances growth with the preservation of our communities' character and safety.
