The Issue

My mum recently became very ill with a severe case of pneumonia, which was a terrifying experience for our family. Due to her medical history, we were deeply concerned when paramedics repeatedly prescribed her the same antibiotics without ever referring her to a General Practitioner or the Royal United Hospital in Bath. Tragically, she ended up spending two gruelling weeks in hospital, and at one point, doctors informed us that her condition was life-threatening and it was a 50/50 chance of survival. I firmly believe that with adequate healthcare and timely interventions, this crisis could have been averted. Instead, it not only put my mum's life at risk but also consumed valuable hospital resources.

This personal experience highlights a grave issue impacting the residents of Warminster: the shortage of accessible healthcare services, particularly General Practitioners (GPs). While the town continues to grow with new housing developments, the GP resources remain insufficient for the existing community. This imbalance results in delayed diagnoses, inadequate treatment, and unnecessary hospital admissions, which not only endanger lives but strain healthcare facilities.

According to the Nuffield Trust, the number of GP consultations in the UK has increased by 31% over the last two decades, yet the number of practising GPs has not kept pace, resulting in longer wait times and decreased quality of care (Nuffield Trust, 2022). The British Medical Association further reports that patient safety is compromised when doctors are overworked and unable to meet demand (BMA, 2023).

Given this verifiable data, it is clear that Warminster cannot support further population growth without first ensuring its healthcare infrastructure is robust enough to meet its residents' needs. We propose a temporary halt to new housing developments until there are sufficient GP surgeries to adequately serve the current population, thus preventing situations like my mum's from happening again.

We call upon local councillors and health authorities to recognize this urgent need. Increased cooperation and planning are required to allocate resources and funding towards healthcare improvements. This includes recruiting more GPs, expanding surgery facilities, and implementing strategic health initiatives tailored to Warminster's growing population.

By supporting this petition, you are urging decision-makers to prioritize health over housing development, ensuring that current and future residents have access to timely and effective medical care. Sign this petition to demand that Warminster's development is responsibly aligned with its healthcare capacity, safeguarding the wellbeing of all its residents.
