The Issue

Growing up in Aptos, one of the joys of childhood has been playing on the open fields and parks that are the heart of our community. Cabrillo College's fields used to be one of those spaces for families and local sports teams, has been a cherished venue for soccer games, baseball matches, and community gatherings for decades.  Most of the community understood, that needed to be redesigned for college students, making way for on-campus housing. This left us with a large issue. Many families, and not enough space for kids to play sports.

The old Par 3 land, as it is called in Aptos, provides a perfect space to recoup some of the park space taken away. However, the County of Santa Cruz plans to develop housing on this precious land, effectively erasing a vital opportunity to provide outdoor sports and recreation for our children and community.

The implications extend beyond just play. The community events and tournaments that would have thrived on these grounds bring more than festivities—they bring economic benefits too. From hosting teams from neighboring counties to attracting visitors who dine and shop locally, these events provide jobs and stimulate the local economy.

We understand the need for housing; however, it should not come at the cost of our communal spaces. We propose the county reconsider and prioritize alternate locations for development, ones that would not strip away the recreational heart of Aptos. Let's look for sustainable solutions that accommodate growth while preserving our treasured public assets.

Join us in urging the County of Santa Cruz to preserve the Par 3. Stand up for the youth who need spaces to play, for the community that thrives around these fields, and for the future of Aptos as a place where recreation and residence can coexist. Please sign our petition to voice your support and help protect these community fields.
