The proposal to build 400-600 houses on the cherished greenbelt land adjacent to Sandown Road in Hazel Grove threatens to exacerbate existing issues faced by our community. This area, known for its natural beauty and essential role as a buffer between urban expansion and rural landscapes, must be preserved for the wellbeing of current and future generations.
Our local roads are already experiencing severe congestion, especially during peak hours. The narrow lanes and junctions cannot accommodate the increased traffic anticipated from such a large development. Several roads in Hazel Grove, including those leading to Sandown Road, are notorious for traffic delays and accidents.
Furthermore, public services such as schools, healthcare facilities, and public transport are operating at maximum capacity. The introduction of potentially hundreds of new families would place an unmanageable strain on these already stretched services, adversely affecting quality of life for all residents.
Greenbelt lands are vital for combating urban sprawl, maintaining biodiversity, and providing recreational spaces that enhance mental and physical health. They serve as the lungs of our urban environment, filtering air pollution and reducing flood risks by absorbing rainfall. The proposed construction would strip this area of its ecological and societal benefits.
Instead of building on greenbelt land, alternative solutions such as redeveloping brownfield sites should be prioritized. These sites already have access to infrastructure and services, minimizing further strain on community resources.
A comprehensive review of the environmental impact and feasibility of the project is essential. Local authorities and developers need to engage with the community and reconsider options in alignment with sustainable development goals.
Your voice can make a difference in preserving the unique character of Hazel Grove and ensuring a sustainable future for our community. Sign the petition to stop the development of houses on our greenbelt land and advocate for a healthier, more balanced approach to urban growth.
