On a hike this morning I found invasive Liriope, aka "Lily turf," botanical name Liriope muscari, on a trail in the northern Virginia woods. Just yesterday, a Home Depot near Alexandria, Virginia was selling this same invasive Liriope, even when the City of Alexandria has listed this species as invasive!
According to the City's statement, "Non-native invasive plants have increasingly become a major threat to natural areas, parks, forests, and wetlands by displacing native species and wildlife and significantly degrading habitats. Today, they are considered perhaps the greatest threat to natural areas and global biodiversity, second only to habitat loss resulting from development and urbanization (Vitousek et al. 1996)."
Unsuspecting homeowners will buy Liriope for their gardens because they trust stores like Home Depot to sell them non-invasive plants. It's up to us to tell Home Depot to STOP selling invasive plants that are causing harm to our parks, wildlife, and environment.
