Today's image is personal for me — we lost three beautiful, mature trees last year to invasive Wintercreeper, botanical name Euonymus fortunei. These vines are used extensively in landscaping for a dense, evergreen ground cover. But birds spread the seeds far and wide, causing infestations in forested areas that displace native plants and kill mature trees.
A groundbreaking 2021 study in Takoma Park, MD found that invasive vines, including Wintercreeper, could kill nearly 5,000 trees in this small community within just 5-7 years. 5,000 mature trees — imagine the climate impact!
Wintercreeper is listed as invasive in 14 states, including mine. But Home Depot and other nurseries keep selling it. Tell your friends to tell Home Depot to STOP selling invasive plants!
