Rep. Brent Crane basically said he’d be fine doing away with cosmetology licensing altogether, and used this as his reasoning: “I’m really struggling why this needs to be licensed. My 15-year-old can do this at home, she has never had a chemical burn and she changes her hair all the time. A bad haircut can be fixed in two weeks. A bad set of nails can be fixed in a month. I’m struggling with what is the necessity is of even 1,000 hours. Help me understand how the world is going to end.” So I want to ask my clients something, genuinely. Would you be okay with a “bad haircut” that you just wait two weeks to fix? Would you be okay with a color that gets messed up and you just deal with it until someone can squeeze you in? Because that’s not how real life works. People go to interviews, weddings, funerals, vacations, and they have to show up to work the next day. Hair is literally on your face. It is your confidence. It is your identity. And it is not just “oops, we’ll fix it in two weeks” when we’re talking about bleach, chemical services, sanitation, infection control, and client safety. HB 513 cuts Idaho cosmetology education from 1,600 to 1,000 hours. If you’ve ever sat in my chair or any stylist’s chair and trusted us with your hair, please sign and share my petition.
