The Issue

Our school is located near an important area for the conservation of native plants and animals in Hawaii. This area is known as "Kawainui" (roughly translated to "the big water") and is a historic fishpond. This marsh is a habitat for many endangered and native birds and plants. For years, we have been working hard to restore this ecosystem by removing invasive species and planting natives. Recently, the mayor of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi, has proposed to build a landfill on Kapa'a Quarry, near both our school and the marsh. Runoff and pollution from this landfill could enter the ecosystem and ruin all the hard work our school and other organizations have done over the years.

This proposal is also in violation of Act 73, which states: "Act 73 is a law that restricts waste disposal sites from being located in a conservation district, and requires a buffer zone of no less than a half-mile around residences, schools, and hospitals for construction, modification, or expansion of waste or disposal sites. "

If you want to keep the ʻAina protected, please sign this petition to help convince the government to find another solution.
