Stop harm: Demand environmental & social justice from SibanyeStillwater Marikana operation
The Issue
My Personal Story:
I am a directly affected community member living in the shadow of the Sibanye Stillwater Marikana operations. Each day, I witness the irreversible damage inflicted upon our land, Air, water, and people. The airborne dust clouds settling over our homes, and the contaminated water from the tailing dam facilities into our local stream (Maretlwane river). I have seen friends and family fall ill due to the pollution and dangerous chemicals. This is not just an operation; it is a crisis that demands immediate action.
Background:
Marikana, a region scarred by the infamous 2012 tragedy, once more finds itself at the forefront of environmental and social injustice. Sibanye Stillwater, a global mining giant, has continued to exploit the area's rich platinum deposits, while neglecting the environment and the communities it impacts. Reports and studies have consistently shown pollution and environmental degradation directly linked to their operations. For example, the air around the facility often measures pollutants, posing a dire threat to human health and biodiversity.
The Problem:
Sibanye Stillwater’s mining activities have torn apart the social fabric of our communities, with families suffering due to the health impacts of pollution. Children are growing up in an environment where clean air and water are luxuries. The promised economic benefits have not materialized for many residents, leaving the community struggling with unemployment and poverty.
Our Call to Action:
We demand that Sibanye Stillwater take immediate, concrete steps to rectify the situation. They must implement in collaboration with affected communities, environmentally sustainable mining practices and invest in pollution control technologies immediately. Furthermore, the corporation should engage in transparent dialogue with community members and create environmental awareness to outline the impact of the tailing dams, smelters, shafts and offering regular updates and receiving feedback in good faith and include affected communities in all the Plenary session. It is crucial they provide support for those adversely affected by their operations, particularly in healthcare, education and poverty alleviation.
What You Can Do:
Sign this petition to stand in solidarity with the Wonderkop, Marikana, ,Bapong , Segwaelane, Majakaneng and other affected communities. By adding your name, you support our fight for justice and demand that Sibanye Stillwater prioritize environmental and social responsibilities over profits. Together, we can hold them accountable and push for a safer, healthier future for the communities surrounding their operations.
Join us in our mission to stop the harm and seek justice for the people of Marikana operations. Sign the petition today!
