TfL has made the following statement.
We are the strategic traffic authority for the Strategic Road Network (SRN) and our role involves understanding and mitigating the impact of proposed scheme interventions and associated works. We have a Network Manager Duty to ensure the expeditious movement of traffic on SRN corridors, with a key focus on protecting sustainable modes in line with governing policy (i.e. the Mayor’s Transport Strategy, and Healthy Streets).
The primary factor contributing to increased congestion along this road in recent years has been the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham’s (LBHF) implementation of the South Fulham Clean Air Neighbourhood scheme. This closed several residential roads to the east and west for through traffic, diverting more vehicles onto Wandsworth Bridge Road for north-south travel. The resulting increase in traffic flow has led to greater congestion.
Since the introduction of LBHF experimental parklets scheme, we have observed a slight increase in bus journey times along this section, suggesting increased difficulty in manoeuvring on Wandsworth Bridge Road. To assess congestion, we typically rely on data from traffic signal detectors. However, as there are no traffic signals or detectors directly within the parklets scheme area, we cannot directly quantify its impact on congestion.
We are engaged in ongoing dialogue with LBHF to determine the next steps on this project and recently met with Officers to discuss the scheme. It is the responsibility of LBHF to provide sufficient evidence, supported by relevant data, demonstrating that the proposed scheme does not significantly impact overall traffic movement or bus performance along Wandsworth Bridge Road.
We will continue to engage with LBHF to understand the issues and work towards a solution that meets both our objectives and LBHF’s for Wandsworth Bridge Road.
Furthermore, in separate correspondence with a member of the Traffic Camera Consulting Group, they have also stated
No decision has been reached at this stage on approvals for any proposals on Wandsworth Bridge Road, this includes the existing trial scheme. We anticipate that this work will be ongoing well into the new year.
Time for the government to step in and sort out the appalling congestion in our area.
