Stop Groton from using gendered "MEN WORKING" construction sign

The Issue

The City of Groton currently uses a "MEN WORKING" sign alongside roads during construction. This sign is a continuation of harmful social attitudes that suggest that other genders, particularly women, are incapable of working trade jobs such as those in the construction industry. This is a perception that must not be continued by Groton if the city wishes to promote the truth, which is that other genders are MORE THAN capable of working construction jobs. This sign is completely inappropriate, especially in a world where research has shown that women feel unwelcome in trade jobs. This petition, and the number of signatures on it, will help justify a formal request to the City of Groton to take this sign out of use. The letter will advocate for a nationally approved "WORKERS AHEAD" sign instead. Previously, activists have seen success in the removal of “MEN WORKING” and/or “MEN AT WORK” construction signs on the basis of promoting gender inclusivity and breaking social gender norms. We must voice our opinion on this issue to help gender inclusivity in our town.
