As a resident of Clark County, Ohio, I am deeply concerned about the proposed installation of 765 kV high tension 175’ power lines and the construction of an expansive substation on 100 acres of vital farmland. This development, orchestrated by Grid Growth Ventures for PJM, threatens not only our landscape but also the homes and well-being of hundreds of landowners.
The intrusion of these massive power lines across the rural vistas of Clark County presents a glaring mismatch with our community’s agricultural roots. Once productive farmland will become unusable, leading to significant economic losses for local farmers who have cared for and depended on this land for generations. My family, like many others, invested a lifetime's work into cultivating this land, and the prospect of witnessing its transformation into an industrial landscape is disheartening.
Moreover, the potential health risks associated with these power lines cannot be ignored. Studies have shown that high-voltage lines generate electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), primarily through the corona effect, which can have adverse effects on human health. The environmental implications are equally concerning, as wildlife habitats face disruption and destruction from both the power lines and the substation development. This project is set to affect areas near Buck Creek with known Bald Eagle populations and nesting grounds along with other endangered species and honey bee populations.
Public Safety will be affected by the High-voltage lines generated electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), primarily through the corona effect (the ionization of air surrounding the conductors). Simply stated, in areas that rely upon Fire & EMS personnel to respond to calls from their home, first-responder residents will potentially no longer receive vital radio traffic to respond to life threatening calls for service.
Financially, the presence of such infrastructure leads to property devaluation. Our homes and properties, treasured for their tranquility and rural charm, will suffer a decline in value, impacting local economies and individual prosperity. The scenic beauty that draws people to this area will be marred, and the essence of our community altered irrevocably. There is no indication that other alternatives to this routing have been examined, including current power corridors already in existence, and there has been no consideration to neighboring landowners to the planned power corridors and facility sites, despite the proximity to this project directly affecting those locations usage and value. And finally, there has been no indication that the costs of this project will be laid upon the facilities it is intended to serve, and not on the landowners and neighbors through whose property this project will cross, but who will derive no benefit from this project.
What can be done? We urge Grid Growth Ventures and PJM to seek alternative solutions that do not compromise the livelihoods and health of Clark County residents. Instead of desecrating farmland, consider rerouting the project through less disruptive pathways or exploring technological advancements that minimize the environmental footprint.
Join us in preserving the integrity of Clark County—our health, our homes, and our environment are at stake. Sign this petition to demand a reevaluation of this project and to advocate for a solution that respects both the land and the people who call it home.
