Stop Greenbay city council from interfering with state regulations for massage therapist.
The Issue
Urgent: Local ordinances limiting times we can work and areas we can work on.
Massage therapists and those seeking massage services will be impacted by regulations imposed upon by Greenbay city council. This will affect the access as a whole to massage therapy.
These changes will limit the ability for massage therapists to set their own schedule due to constraints on the hours we can provide services. This will affect most people who work full time jobs that require massage therapy appointments after their work days ends. These changes limit our ability to provide mobile massage services despite our malpractice insurance (that we are required to have by the state) which covers us for mobile massage therapy. A huge change is the prohibition of our treatment planning for any deficit related to the “buttocks” as in glutes, piriformis, psoas, etc, etc. Just this clause alone makes it impossible for us to treat conditions such as sciatica, piriformis syndrome, IT band syndrome, SI joint dysfunctions, anterior/posterior pelvic tilts, hip labrum injuries, knock knee, bow legs, plantar fasciitis, low back pain, just to name a few. We are trained, certified and licensed to perform massage therapy treatments on all of those disorders. These treatments could soon be prohibited due to these city ordinance changes. These are muscles that we work with every single day.
Immediate action is essential as these changes can burden the impact that massage therapy has on healthcare. The state massage therapy law (Wi DSPS) states this: “460.17 Local regulation.
(1) A city, village, town, or county may not enact an ordinance that regulates the practice of massage therapy or bodywork therapy by a person who is licensed by the affiliated credentialing board under this chapter. No provision of any ordinance enacted by a city, village, town, or county that is in effect before February 1, 1999, and that relates to the practice of massage therapy or bodywork therapy, may be enforced against a person who is licensed by the affiliated credentialing board under this chapter.”
