The Shasta Union High School District supports the use of graphic violent pop culture music videos and media in the classroom. Videos such as "This is America" by Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino Childish Gambino are being used in 11th grade English classrooms. This issue was discussed with the teacher, department chair, site principal, district superintendent and is now being appealed to the SUHSD board of trustees because of a failure to act on the part of the department chair, principal, and superintendent. In fact, the superintendent states in a written response that he will continue to support the use of the video and others like it.
***Disclaimer: This video contains graphic violence (execution style murder, mass murder), nudity, criminal behavior and profanity. ***
We need your support to fight back against the use of this graphic violent material that displays a head shot execution, a mass murder of a church choir, a suicide attempt, and other criminal behavior such as rioting, and illicit drug use, and other themes such as hatred toward protected racial, ethnic and religious groups, degradation of law enforcement and the rule of law. This material is damaging to our students and not only violates state law, education codes, state standards, and board policy, but it serves to desensitize our youth to violence and inhumane treatment of other humans, and adversely reflects people of color in several protected groups.
If we don't stop the school district from subjecting our kids to this inappropriate content, it will only continue to become more frequently used, which will further embolden the district to defy parent's rights, and desires for their children's education. We must hold the district accountable to the State of California Education Codes, State Standards for Review of Social Content, and local board policies.
The answer to this problem is laid out in a simple and effective four-part resolution which has been presented to all of the aforementioned stakeholders. Once you have signed this petition, a generic letter with your signature will be sent to each board member and the superintendent via email, expressing your disapproval of the use of this video and other materials like it. You will also be effectively requesting that the superintendent and school board implement each request conveyed in the bullet points above.
