The Issue

I want to protect myself, my employees, and my teenage kids, which is why I am requesting Google to implement a solution to prevent random spam users from cluttering the 'shared with me' section in Google Drive. It is not just a personal inconvenience; it is a matter of safety and security for all users, particularly the younger, more impressionable ones.

Currently, there's no functionality to preemptively block unsolicited files from entering this section, which poses a considerable risk. Imagine a teenager unwittingly clicking on a shared file, only to find unacceptable content—be it criminal, sexual, or otherwise indecent. Such exposure can be damaging, not only to children but to anyone who uses Google Drive personally or professionally.

According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, over 75% of teenagers use Google Drive for school and communication purposes. The lack of basic protective features against unwanted file sharing is simply unacceptable, considering the platform's widespread use.

Our solution is clear: Google must provide options that allow users to filter and block unknown senders from sharing files proactively. A simple opt-in feature for blocking all non-contact file sharing, for instance, could be a game-changer. This measure would add a much-needed layer of security without compromising the accessibility and collaboration features Google Drive offers.

It is a simple, basic feature and protocol that can safeguard millions of users worldwide from unnecessary harm and inconvenience. Google has always been at the forefront of technological advancement, and adding this protective measure would reinforce their commitment to user safety.

Please join me in urging Google to take immediate action and develop measures that provide more control over who can share files in the 'shared with me' section of Google Drive. Sign this petition to make this change happen and protect not just ourselves, but also our children, employees, and everyone who relies on Google Drive daily.
