We, the undersigned, are calling on the Irish Government, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, and Leitrim County Council to take immediate and permanent action to protect County Leitrim from the dangers of gold mining.

Leitrim is one of Ireland’s most ecologically rich and unspoiled counties — its rivers, lakes, woodlands, and communities are not compatible with destructive extractive industries.

Gold mining poses significant threats:

⚠️ Water Contamination: Toxic chemicals such as cyanide and heavy metals used in extraction processes can pollute drinking water and destroy aquatic ecosystems.
⚠️ Environmental Destruction: Open-pit mining scars the land, destroys habitats, and threatens wildlife. It endangers Leitrim’s tourism, farming, and peaceful rural way of life.
⚠️ Community Harm: Noise, heavy machinery, dust, and road traffic from exploration and mining activities severely impact local health and well-being.
⚠️ Climate Hypocrisy: At a time when Ireland must reduce carbon emissions, gold mining pushes us in the opposite direction.

🛑 We demand:

An immediate halt to all gold mining activity in County Leitrim.
The cancellation of all current prospecting licenses issued in the county.
A permanent ban on the issuance of any future mining or prospecting licenses for gold in County Leitrim.
The establishment of community-led consultations on sustainable rural development priorities.

We call on public representatives and decision-makers to act now. Leitrim is a place of natural beauty, clean water, and vibrant communities — it should not be sacrificed for corporate profit and speculative mining interests.
