The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) has permitted various GM (genetically modified) Crop trials across India. In Maharashtra, GM Rubber tree trials is permitted in Dahanu by Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) and various other GM food crops trials (brinjal, tomato, okra, rice, corn)have been permitted across the state. 

It is important to note that the Government of Kerala has disallowed the GM Rubber trials & pledged to keep its State GM free for protection of its agriculture, its agro-biodiversity as well as the highly pristine and valuable biodiversity of Western Ghats. The Government of Bihar to safeguard the non-GM corn crop has disallowed the GM Corn crop trials while also keeping in view the welfare of the farmers, security of biodiversity, safety of environment & human health. Similarly, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has disallowed GM Corn trials in its State until the safety of GM is proved beyond doubt.

Unlike these States, Maharashtra has taken no such steps & therefore we need to urge the Chief Minister for an urgent action. Please spare a moment and check the letter to Chief Minister of Maharashtra to Disallow GM field trials in the State. The various reasons why these trials should be stopped are mentioned therein.
