The Issue

The U.S. Forest Service is planning to spray glyphosate and other herbicides in El Dorado National Forest, just outside the Tahoe Basin near the Sierra at Tahoe ski resort. This decision has created a wave of concern among residents of Lake Tahoe, who are rightfully worried about the consequences. Glyphosate is known to be carcinogenic and poses significant risks to humans, wildlife, and crucial pollinators like bees. Moreover, it has the potential to contaminate our vital water sources.

The Caldor Fire in 2021 left a trail of devastation in its wake, and now, in an attempt to manage the aftermath, this dangerous chemical is being applied to eliminate remaining weeds and trees. Even though the Forest Service plans to spray herbicides selectively, there remains a possibility that these chemicals will seep into Lake Tahoe's pristine waters. Our beloved wildlife and environment should not bear the brunt of such a heavy-handed approach.

Adding to the complexity, there are plans to open more data centers in the Lake Tahoe area, thereby potentially redirecting power away from residents to support these facilities. NV Energy's arrangement with Liberty Utilities illustrates the looming energy crisis; power needs driven by data centers are overshadowing residential necessities. With Northern Nevada already host to more than 40 data centers, and the strain showing, we cannot allow environmental neglect to compound our problems.

We need to protect the delicate ecosystems that make Lake Tahoe and its surroundings so unique. Our community must come together to demand sustainable alternatives that do not rely on harmful chemicals or threaten our natural resources. Sign this petition to urge the U.S. Forest Service to halt the use of glyphosate in El Dorado National Forest.
