Stop Glorifying Abusive Parents in Media

The Issue

It's infuriating to live in a world where media outlets choose to glorify perpetrators while true victims are brushed under the carpet. This is especially the case in the portrayal of the Menendez brothers' situation. Jose and Kitty Menendez were not the victims; they were the monsters who subjected their sons, Erik and Lyle, to years of harrowing abuse. Yet media narratives seem resolute in casting these abusers in a sympathetic light, almost glorifying them even in their death. It is sickening and dangerous.

I am personally appalled by how our society often sides with abusers, turning a blind eye to the destruction they leave behind. Erik and Lyle didn’t kill their parents out of greed or for their inheritance; they acted out of desperation to break free from the chains of relentless abuse. It is shameful that the media continues to twist this narrative, making it difficult to distinguish the real victims from the enablers.

Media attention in cases of abuse should be fair, responsible, and truth-driven. When the media glorifies abusers, it not only disrespects the true victims but also sets a precedent that allows predators to continue their horrific deeds unchallenged. This disgraceful portrayal can embolden others to follow in the footsteps of these abusers. We need to demand better, more accurate storytelling that truly reflects the gruesome realities many endure and not just paint a picture that's more suited for sensationalist narratives.

It is on us to hold media accountable for the impact their portrayals have on public perception. We must insist that they stop providing platforms to the likes of the Menendez parents, reinforcing narratives that downplay their monstrous actions. It is time to stop covering up for abusers, time to stop enabling their legacies.

Sign this petition to urge media outlets to stop glorifying abusive parents and to tell stories grounded in fairness and truth, reflecting the real pain and suffering of victims. Let us stand against this narrative that insults not only the Menendez brothers but countless other victims of abuse whose stories, too, deserve to be told with dignity.
