Stop "GLANCE on SAMSUNG" Lock-Screen Ads: Demand Refunds with ₹5,00,000 compensation
The Issue
To: The Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY); Samsung India Electronics Pvt. Ltd.; InMobi Pte Ltd; Glance InMobi Pte Ltd.
When you pay full price for a smartphone, you own the hardware. You do not buy a permanent advertising billboard. Yet, millions of Samsung Android users across India are being trapped by an aggressive corporate monetization scheme run by Samsung in a deep commercial partnership with Glance (InMobi Pte. Ltd.). During the out-of-box setup sequence or after a factory data reset, the device's firmware intercepts the boot sequence. It completely blocks your phone's basic telecommunication and hardware functions behind a mandatory, non-negotiable consent screen: "Glance on Samsung".
There is no "Decline All," "Skip," or "Offline Setup" option available. If you do not agree to surrender your private lock screen to Glance's targeted advertisements and background tracking pipelines, your paid-for smartphone becomes a completely unusable "digital brick".
Why This is a Direct Threat to Consumers:
Glance Privileged System Surveillance: This is not ordinary, removable bloatware. Forensic technical analysis via Android Debug Bridge (ADB) reveals that the Glance platform operates natively within the highly privileged priv-system partition of Samsung devices. It holds dangerous root-level system permissions by default. This allows Glance to persistently track your location, read device identifiers, Apps Installed on device and deploy un-throttled background telemetry without granular or explicit user control. This is corporate mass surveillance hardcoded into your personal asset.
Unauthorized Resource Theft by Glance: Because Glance cannot be fully uninstalled from the system core, it runs continuously in the background. On a conservative empirical evaluation, it silently consumes approximately 1.2 GB of your paid mobile data allowance per month just to refresh advertisements and multimedia payloads you never requested. Furthermore, persistent background wake-locks generated by Glance severely cause critical interface lag, and deplete total battery health. It Reactivates itself, upon a Random Accidental click by Left Scroll on Lock-Screen, when it was already set to "none" in Wallpaper services TO DISABLE "GLANCE-ON_SAMSUNG".
Void Conditional Consent: Under Section 6(1) of India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, personal data consent must be free, unconditional, and specific. Conditioning the basic operational utility of physical hardware on the surrender of personal data to Glance's advertising network renders that consent legally void.
Our Legal Battle & The Financial Remedy We Seek
My formal consumer appeal (Appeal No. of 2026) has been admitted before the Hon'ble State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Maharashtra, at Mumbai, challenging the structural exploitation of consumer graphical user interfaces (Dark Patterns) by Samsung and Glance. We are actively expanding this into a representative class action under Section 35(1)(c) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
We are fighting for direct financial remedies for every verified claimant in the class.
Seeking Full Purchase Refunds: Total reversal of the original transaction value for every handset rendered conditional and defective by post-purchase forced terms.
₹5,00,000 Exemplary Damages Per Device: We are demanding severe punitive costs against Samsung and Glance to deter predatory corporate design practices, penalize structural dark patterns, and compensate for systemic data harvesting and tracking without uncoerced consent.
Pecuniary Compensation: Direct monetary recovery for the unauthorized background consumption of user data packs and measurable hardware battery degradation.
Disgorgement of Illicit Profits: Forcing Samsung and Glance to surrender and return the massive commercial advertising revenues generated by illicitly monetizing your device's lock-screen real estate, making them create a market valuation of 1.8 Billion US$ at the cost of 450 Million Indian Citizens RIGHT TO PRIVACY. The manufacturing and tech advertising industry claims that everyday consumers do not care about dark patterns, Glance bloatware, or structural privacy defects. Let us prove them wrong.
