BOYCOTT Movie that Jokes about Abandoning Pets & Downplays Reality of Homeless Life.
The Issue
I IMPLORE you to BAN the soon to be released Movie “STRAYS.” This movie is making light of abandoning dogs AND glamorizing what street life is for homeless pets. While the movie is suppose to be a comedy, the epidemic of homeless animals is nothing to make light of and so many people don’t understand ACTUAL life for homeless animals. *** Across the globe, Animal Rescuers have been working for DECADES to bring the euthanasia rate & homeless animal population down. Within the last 2 years alone, all that rescue work has become undone (due to covid/economy, etc). Across the country, ALL rescues and shelters are BLEEDING and now euthanasia rates are climbing again. Shelters & rescues have to say no due to overwhelming epidemic & now we have an ALARMING uptick of pups & kitties being dumped again.
Unfortunately, some tend to believe all they see on the screen. One example is the 2022 movie “Dog.” People then got Belgian Malinois / German Shepards not realizing the breed needs. It became a problem because then they were returned, surrendered, dumped, & a Public Warning had to be issued. Another example is “Game of Thrones.” Husky ownership increased because of the dogs used. Yet another Public Warning about understanding breeds had to be announced because these same Huskies were being abandoned.
While I appreciate the pup wanting revenge, making light of a human who repeatedly tried to dump his dog & then glamorizing street life for strays is ridiculous & goes against everything rescue work is about. We ALREADY have high rate of pups being abandoned.
The FACTS are:
- - Abandoned dogs/kitties don’t think being dumped is a “fun game.”
- - Abandoned dogs don’t meet a friendly gang of pups that show them the ropes of street life.
- Abandoned dogs NOT rescued ARE: terrified, euthanized, victims of other predators, hit by vehicles, or die from starvation or injuries/illness.
I have been involved in animal rescue for a decade. This movie is irresponsible and undermines everything we Animal Rescuers have been fighting for with our blood, sweat, and tears. While this movie is a comedy, the aftermath of humans is what is dangerous.
——-Instead of watching this movie, I call on you to please sign my petition and SHARE it far & wide. Take the money you would spend on the movie ticket & snacks and instead donate it to your local rescue or shelter. And look into volunteering. That’s the best way to help homeless animals. Picture is my current foster. I drive rescue transport, foster, and volunteer with Safe Hands Rescue. I walk the walk. Please walk alongside me.
