Stop giving live animals as prizes at local carnivals
The Issue
Growing up in Frederick County, the annual carnivals and fairs were always a highlight. From the vibrant sounds of laughter and music to the tantalising scent of cotton candy, everything seemed magical. But amidst the joy and excitement, there was always one booth that concerned me deeply: the one handing out goldfish in plastic bags as prizes. Unfortunately, this practice is not just limited to goldfish; throughout the years the games have evolved to give out reptiles like Anole Lizards, and hermit crabs which find themselves in precarious situations after being awarded as prizes without consideration for their well-being and future care.
The reality is stark: animals handed over as prizes are often neglected or improperly cared for due to a lack of preparation and education. Most recipients are thrilled with the novelty for just a few days — before the responsibilities of care become apparent. Without the means or knowledge to offer proper shelter, food, or environment, these animals suffer and frequently face premature deaths.
This practice also sets a harmful example for children, who learn that animals are disposable, mere objects for amusement rather than living beings deserving compassion and respect. Allowing such practices to continue teaches the next generation that it's acceptable to treat pets as transient toys rather than lifelong companions. What does it say about our society if an animal’s life can be won on a whim?
Many studies conducted throughout the years have shown that a significant number of animals given as prizes suffer from poor health due to inadequate care. Goldfish, which can live up to 30 years, often die within weeks because of a lack of understanding of important care topics like Cycling an aquarium. Similarly, other small animals are frequently left abandoned or released into the wild where they cannot survive on their own.
Organizers of these events should be encouraged to offer alternative non-living prizes or promote more educational activities that engage attendees and instil a sense of responsibility towards our fellow living beings.
Please stand with me in urging the game operators and organizers of our beloved local events to do away with the outdated and cruel practice of giving away live animals as prizes. Sign this petition and help to create a more compassionate society where every living creature is respected and valued. Your signature could be the voice of change needed to protect these innocent animals and influence a shift in societal norms towards more ethical treatment of all creatures.
