My concern for the effects of geoengineering and weather modification practices, otherwise known as “stratospheric aerosol injection” in the UK stems from a deep sense of personal responsibility. The topic may seem complex, or far fetched, but simply put, it affects us all – friends, families, strangers, and our future generations alike. 

Geoengineering refers to large-scale interventions in the earth's climate system, in efforts to combat or counteract the effects of “global warming/solar radiation”. Yet, there is understandable concern about these practices due to the potential consequences. An instance of this is the initiation of the HAARP program in the US which sparked controversy related to health and safety impacts of high-frequency radio waves on humans and the environment. 

Similarly, in the UK, weather modification, such as cloud seeding, has been in practice since the 1950s, impacting our environmental balance unpredictably. A historical case to recollect is the Lynmouth disaster in 1952, which is alleged to have been a result of cloud seeding experiments conducted by the RAF leading to catastrophic flooding, and in more recent times, the flooding caused in Dubai due to the cloud seeding practices there.

The sentiment echoed here is not to outright reject technological and scientific advancements. Rather, it is to urge transparency, proper public consultation, (of which there has been none) and thorough consideration of the potential ecological and social impacts. We, the British public demand an immediate stop to these practices until they prove to be safe and effective without causing harm to humans, other mammals, insects (especially pollinators), plant life, the soil, and the environment as a whole. Use of heavy metals such as silver iodide, barium, strontium, and aluminium during these practices can only be toxic for the aforementioned. This is manufactured climate change, and needs to stop.
