Stop Gas Station Construction Near Bayside High School

Stop Gas Station Construction Near Bayside High School
The Issue
This proposed gas station is right across the street from Bayside High School and backs up to dozens of homes. As residents, we are deeply concerned about the impact this development could have on our community. We all worry about cancer-causing air pollution, ground pollution from leaching and stormwater runoff, increased crime rates, and most importantly, the safety of the students at Bayside High School.
A gas station so close to a school poses significant health risks. The emission of harmful pollutants like benzene, toluene, and xylene from gas stations is well-documented and can contribute to various health issues, including cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), benzene is a known human carcinogen. The proximity to a high school is particularly concerning because children are more susceptible to these environmental hazards than adults.
Moreover, the construction and operation of a gas station can lead to environmental degradation. Leaking underground storage tanks can contaminate soil and groundwater, affecting our local ecosystem and residential areas. The runoff from oil and fuel spills can have disastrous effects on local wildlife and waterways.
In addition to environmental and health risks, the establishment of a gas station in this area may lead to increased traffic congestion, accidents, and crime. Studies have shown that areas near gas stations often experience a rise in crimes such as theft and vandalism. The safety of students, residents, and local businesses must be a priority.
There are better alternatives to meet the needs of our community without compromising our health, safety, and environment. We urge the local authorities and planners to reconsider the location of this gas station and explore other viable options that do not endanger our community.
Join us in protecting the safety and well-being of our children, neighbors, and environment. Sign this petition to voice your opposition to the construction of a gas station at the corner of Bayside Lakes Blvd and Degroodt Rd.
