The Issue

The Isle of Wight Council has once again put forward proposals to introduce parking charges in areas that have traditionally been free for residents and visitors. Similar proposals were rejected last year, but have now been brought forward again.

Following their rejection last year, we, the undersigned, oppose the Isle of Wight Council introducing additional parking charges at the following locations which are currently free:

Gurnard
Gurnard Seafront

Ventnor
Wheelers Bay Car Park
Eastcliff Car Park

Newport
Royal Exchange Car Park

Wroxall
St Martin’s Road Car Park

Brighstone
Warne’s Lane Car Park

Godshill
Godshill Car Park

Yarmouth
Bouldnor Viewpoint Car Park
Fort Victoria Car Park

St Helens
St Helens Green Car Park

Shanklin
Hope Road

We also oppose proposals that would reduce or remove existing limited free parking in:

Ryde
Union Street

Sandown
High Street

Shanklin
Regent Street

Ventnor
High Street

Newport
St James’ Street
Crocker Street
Union Street
Terrace Road
St John’s Place

These locations are more than simply places to park. They serve local communities, shops, businesses and visitor attractions across the Island.

There is concern that introducing charges where parking is currently free could discourage people from stopping, shopping or visiting these areas, particularly where free parking remains available elsewhere. This could have consequences for small businesses that depend on passing trade and regular local customers.

Additional charges could also affect residents who regularly use these locations, including those travelling to local shops, amenities, seafronts and community facilities.

The Island’s towns, villages and visitor destinations depend heavily on both local custom and tourism. Before introducing new charges or removing existing periods of free parking, we believe the Council should fully consider the potential impact on residents, businesses and visitor numbers, and properly engage with the communities affected.

By signing this petition, we are asking the Isle of Wight Council to reconsider these proposals and retain the existing free parking arrangements at the locations listed above.
