Being involved in the activism and rescue of animals, many of us are witnessing fake and fraudulent rescues surfacing everywhere. These entities exploit shelter animals and those saved from dire circumstances to collect donations, pledges, and funds under false pretenses. Instead of providing the promised care, these animals are subjected to neglect and, in tragic cases, severe abuse or even death.

Animals who end up in shelters are already in a vulnerable position; they deserve a genuine chance at a better life, not further exploitation. Fraudulent rescues often claim to put the welfare of animals first, yet their actions say otherwise. This betrayal not only harms innocent creatures but also tarnishes the reputations of legitimate rescues and shelters working tirelessly to make a difference.

Current systems lack adequate measures to ensure transparency and accountability in shelter adoptions and rescue pulls. As a result, fraudulent rescues are slipping through the cracks, exploiting animals and misusing funds meant for their care. Laws must be established and enforced countrywide to protect animals and improve shelter pull systems & the work rescues do with boarding care facilities who a lot of times are stuck with dogs and unpaid bills.

We propose mandatory background checks for any individual or organization pulling animals from shelters, regular audits of rescue operations, Require all rescues to be registered nationally, not just state-level 501(c)(3)s and the public disclosure of where and how funds are allocated. Transparency is crucial in demonstrating genuine intent and ensuring that every dollar donated is used to better animal welfare.

The introduction of a centralized database to track and verify rescue operations can also reinforce accountability, making it easier to flag suspicious activities. Working together, we can curb these deceitful practices.
