The Issue

When I took my son to Belfair Urgent Care in Washington for a simple shirt visit, I never imagined it would lead to surprise bills. Owned by Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH), this urgent care not only billed us for their urgent care services but also sent us a staggering ~$2,000 bill from the St. Michael's Medical Center and Hospital in Silverdale, which is a facility we never set foot in. I thought this was a mistake since it does not make sense to recieve additional bills from medical facilities that you never visited, but when I sought clarification, I was informed that VMFH intentionally bills patients as if they had visited the hospital so they can charge patients drastically more money. This deceptive practice is not just a shock to many unsuspecting families but a breach of trust in a healthcare system that should prioritize billing transparency.

VMFH says that they have some small print that informs people that they can send you bills from facilities that you never visited. I feel like this small print is not enough. The urgent care in Belfair should change it's name to better convey the bills that patients will recieve from the St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale. The name should be updated to St. Michael Medical Center and Urgent care if they want to continue to send bills from the St Michael Medical Center and Hospital in Silverdale. That way patients will be more aware that this is not a normal traditional urgent care and to expect more expensive bills from the Hospital.

Charging thousands of dollars from a seperate Hospital for a simple urgent care visit in Belfair will result in higher insurance premiums each year for residents, and means more of our tax dollars gets used up when we subsidize the medical bills of low income families in the community. This also means that most of the money made at the Belfair Urgent care does not stay in Belfair, but gets sent to Silverdale instead since the bills are coming from there.

There are reports of childcare and hospice fraud all around the US right now, and we should not stand for misleading marketing and fraudulent bills happening at the Belfair Urgent Care right in our backyard which is a drain on our community.
