STOP Ford from Repealing Bill 148--Protect SURVIVORS of DOMESTIC and SEXUAL VIOLENCE
The Issue
Doug Ford and his legislature are planning to repeal Bill 148, an integral labour bill that provides survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence paid leave and job security to deal with the fall out of the trauma they've experienced.
The time off allows survivors to do things like relocate to safety; seek medical attention; seek legal advice; and regain their footing without the threat of losing their job. 10 days are provided, five of which are paid, and up to 14 additional weeks are available unpaid without the threat of losing employment, which literally is a matter of life and death for many survivors.
Without job security, survivors cannot secure a future free from violence for themselves and their children; this Bill helps save lives directly. It also offsets the cost to society, as it serves as a preventative measure to avoid unnecessary burdens on healthcare, social services, and the legal system as survivors are given the time needed to cope with their experience, rather than fall into further difficulty as a result of being victimized.
