Stop Forcing Lash Artists to Pay $10K+ for Irrelevant Training in Florida
The Issue
Florida’s licensing laws are gatekeeping the lash industry, forcing aspiring artists to spend thousands on licenses that barely even teach them how to lash. And it’s time for that to change.
My name is Nayomi Valentine, and between earning my cosmetology license and investing in continued education and certification courses, I’ve easily spent over $20,000 just to build a career in lashing. What’s frustrating is that most of those “certification” courses weren’t even state-approved, and many were taught by people who weren’t licensed themselves. I learned a lot through trial and error, often leaving trainings more confused than when I went in.
While I eventually found programs that truly helped me grow, it shouldn’t be this complicated or expensive for someone who just wants to focus on lashes. Florida needs a state-approved lash certification path that is accessible, affordable, and legitimate, so future artists can start strong without wasting time and money.
Right now in Florida, aspiring lash artists are forced to spend thousands of dollars on full cosmetology or facial specialist programs, programs that barely touch on lashing at all. This creates an unnecessary financial and time burden, especially for young women, single mothers, and minority entrepreneurs who are simply trying to build a better future. Many are left unlicensed or working under the table, not because they lack talent or drive, but because the current system is outdated and inaccessible.
Other states are already moving forward. Arizona recently introduced a 30-hour lash technician certification that focuses on safety, sanitation, and lash-specific techniques, without the massive financial strain. Meanwhile, Texas offers a lash specialty license, while still requiring 320 hours of training, proving that there’s room to rethink how these hours are structured and delivered.
Now is the time to act. The lash industry is booming, and it’s not slowing down. Florida has an opportunity to lead by example and modernize its beauty licensing to match the real needs of today’s market. A standalone lash license would empower more professionals to launch legal, safe businesses, and give beauty educators the tools to help them succeed. Let’s stop gatekeeping the industry and start creating real access.
