Stop Forcing Fire Survivors to Itemize Every Loss — Honor Our Full Insurance Coverage

Stop Forcing Fire Survivors to Itemize Every Loss — Honor Our Full Insurance Coverage
The Issue
Petition to: State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, and all insurance providers handling wildfire loss claims; the California Department of Insurance; and U.S. Legislators
⸻
We lost everything — our homes, our belongings, our history. And now, insurance companies are asking us to relive it, item by item.
We are survivors of the devastating wildfires, including the Palisades Fire — one of the most destructive natural disasters in U.S. history. Entire homes were reduced to ash. Families were displaced. Communities were shattered. And after surviving this trauma, we’re now being asked by our insurance providers to itemize every single object we lost — from socks to photo albums, from shampoo bottles to heirlooms — before they’ll release the funds we’ve been faithfully paying for through our premiums.
This is INHUMANE.
We’re not trying to profit. We’re trying to rebuild.
We’re not exaggerating our loss. We lost everything.
Other insurance providers, such as the California FAIR Plan (CFP), recognized this. They paid out personal property policy limits without demanding detailed itemization. But major companies — like State Farm, Allstate, and Farmers — are now requiring full itemized inventories from families who no longer even have a toothbrush left to count.
And even if this weren’t the case — even if no other provider offered better treatment — it is still profoundly unfair to expect people who have lost everything to recreate the contents of their lives from memory. The emotional toll, the time required, and the retraumatization it causes is unacceptable.
It’s not only cruel — it’s unjust.
⸻
We are demanding:
1. That insurance companies honor the full personal property policy limits for total-loss survivors — without requiring itemized inventories in cases where the home was completely destroyed.
2. That survivors not be retraumatized or delayed by unnecessary red tape in the face of catastrophic loss.
3. That state and federal lawmakers establish clear protections ensuring fair, trauma-informed treatment for disaster victims moving forward.
⸻
This practice must end. We pay our premiums. We carry our policies in good faith. And when disaster strikes, we deserve to be treated with compassion, respect, and fairness.
Sign this petition if you believe fire survivors should not be forced to relive their loss item by item — and that insurance companies must honor the policies they sold.
Thank you so much for your support — it truly means the world to us. Every signature, every share, and every voice helps us get one step closer to justice, healing, and a fair path forward.
