Over 26.5 million Americans are food insecure as of 2023. That number includes the most vulnerable, like children and the older population. The problem of food insecurity is getting worse from ongoing issues, including poverty, unemployment, and low income. While many people need access to the food supply, restaurant and grocery store corporations throw out 85% of the unused food daily. The food corporations on this list are famous, like Walmart, Stater Bros. Markets, Albertsons, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, Applebee's Grill, Chipotle, and many more. The leftover foods from these places are fresh but thrown out because they sometimes have unmet standards. Also, many of these industries fear the date getting too close, and people will not buy the item. Instead of donating the food, the places waste the food. While this may seem reasonable, food waste in landfills and rots produces much methane – a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. Also, the expiration date merely shows that the food quality has probably already passed anyway. Please show support and fight against food waste that leads to food insecurity.
