STOP EXPLOITING AFRICAN REFUGEES FOR FASHION

Atlanta, GA, United States
Created March 13, 2024

The Issue

High end fashion brands have been found  complicit in genocides, pollution, & exploitation, in Palestine, Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Tigray and more.

This includes model recruitment and exploitation of young men & women from African refugee camps, who are left homeless and in debt.

Modeling agencies have started recruiting directly in one of Africa’s biggest refugee camps: camp Kakuma in Kenya.

Under the guise of ethnic inclusion, the promise of a shining career is often just a ruse.

A single case of a refugee model, recruited under dubious circumstances, exploited and sent back to Kakuma with agency debt,  inspired activists and charitable organizations to take action. More cases like this, continue to come to light.

By signing this petition you show your support for better regulation and enforcement of workers rights within the fashion industry.

We are calling governments, the fashion industry and managing organisations of refugee camps to support and implement the following:

1. Sign into action the fashion workers act Bill  S.2477B started by  The Model Alliance

2. Vet agencies, organizations and individuals who are allowed entry into refugee camps; create and enforce safeguards, particularly for minors, to protect all individuals under UNHCR care from scams, exploitation and abuse.

3. Require model agencies and associated organizations to join the Model Trust and agree in writing to adhere to ethical practices and code of conduct along with any company or organization they work with.

Get involved in protecting our community through ethical fashion

- Join the Pledges: #nobloodbrands #wearenotatrend (links in bio) to hold consumers accountable in not buying brands that violate human rights

  • Give to Runways to Freedom, who support exploited models trapped in unfair or inhumane contracts, facing homelessness and mental health crises.
