I am deeply disheartened by a tragic reality unfolding right under our noses—ex-racing Greyhounds from the UK are being transported to China, where their fate is often bleak and inhumane. These gentle creatures, after spending years entertaining crowds on racing tracks, deserve to retire in peace and comfort, not find themselves shipped across the world to face unknown hardships.

Greyhounds, known for their speed and grace, are one of the sweetest and most loving dog breeds. To see them treated as mere commodities, packed and shipped off to uncertain futures, is a betrayal of the bond we humans share with our canine companions. Numerous reports have emerged indicating that many of these dogs end up in horrific conditions in China, often used in the meat trade or kept in deplorable environments while waiting for adoption, with little regard for their wellbeing.

According to Greyhound Companions, an estimated 10,000 Greyhounds leave racing each year in the UK alone. Many are rehomed, but a significant number are sold overseas. When they reach countries where animal welfare laws are lax and enforcement is minimal, these dogs can experience appalling treatment.

This is why it’s imperative to halt the export of these beautiful animals to places where their safety and dignity are not guaranteed. The UK has stringent animal welfare standards, and we should be extending these protections to ensure our Greyhounds are rehomed appropriately within the UK or to countries with similarly robust standards.

We call on the British government, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and advocacy groups to take concrete steps to ban the export of ex-racing Greyhounds to countries with poor track records on animal welfare. This will involve reviewing existing policies, working with animal rights organizations, and implementing stricter regulations to ensure traceability and accountability when UK dogs are rehomed abroad.
