The Issue

As a dedicated dog owner and veteran, I have always believed in the invaluable service dogs provide to the society, in many capacities, including serving and service animals.  They have done incredible service towards mankind for ages.  As you get to know dogs, and their behavior, you will understand the unique qualities dogs possess. It deeply pains me to see countless Indian street dogs facing euthanasia due to overpopulation and neglect.

Street dogs in India, often referred to as "desi dogs" or "pariah dogs," face severe conditions due to overcrowding, lack of resources, and inadequate protective laws. According to estimates, there are over 30 million stray dogs in India. Many are left to struggle against hunger, disease, and potential violence from humans. However, a staggering number are culled in population control measures, which are neither humane nor long-term solutions.

Instead of resorting to euthanasia, we need to implement robust sterilization programs, create more shelter homes, and launch public awareness campaigns to promote adoption. Successful models exist where communities have reduced street dog populations humanely, including by increasing adoption rates and involving local organizations in controlled sterilization.

Governments and local authorities should be urged to partner with NGOs to strategize effective and compassionate methods of population control. Such partnerships can also work towards educating the public about the benefits of adopting these resilient and loving animals.

Join us in calling for an end to the routine euthanization of street dogs in India in favor of humane, sustainable solutions. Please sign this petition to push for effective and compassionate policies that will ensure a better future for these innocent lives.
