The Issue
Every year, thousands of healthy dogs, including pregnant and nursing mothers, are euthanized in animal shelters across our communities. This tragedy is not only inhumane but also unnecessary, as there are viable alternatives that can be implemented to prevent the premature deaths of these animals.
A significant issue is the short holding period for surrendered and stray dogs, which is currently as little as 7 days in many shelters. This limited timeframe does not allow enough opportunity for these dogs to find new homes, especially in cases where potential adopters may need more time to make arrangements to adopt. We propose extending the holding period to 45 days, providing a greater chance for these animals to be adopted.
Furthermore, pregnant dogs and nursing mothers face a grim fate, often euthanized before they have the chance to care for their young. This not only affects the mothers but also deprives puppies of their chance to experience life. We must implement policies that protect these vulnerable animals by providing them with care and giving them the opportunity to be adopted.
To increase adoption rates, all dogs should be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. This practice not only helps in controlling the pet population but also improves the chances of animals being adopted, as many people prefer to adopt pets that are already spayed or neutered.
We are calling for comprehensive reform across all animal shelters to introduce these changes. These measures are practical and aligned with the ethical treatment of animals, providing them with the dignity and respect they deserve. Let's work together to make shelters a refuge of hope instead of a place where lives are cut short needlessly.
Join us in pressing for change and giving our furry friends the second chance they deserve. Sign this petition to demand humane treatment for all shelter dogs and create a future where no healthy or vulnerable dog is euthanized without exhausting all options for adoption.
