Stop Euthanisation of healthy shelter animals in Australia - Make Compassion the Law

Every year, thousands of healthy, loving animals in Australia are euthanised simply because shelters run out of space.
Not because they are sick.
Not because they are dangerous.
But because they ran out of time.
This must change.
Why this matters
As someone who has spent years rescuing and rehabilitating animals, I’ve seen the heartbreaking reality behind the numbers.
I’ve seen:
• Healthy dogs and cats put down due to overcrowding
• Kittens euthanised during peak breeding seasons
• Pets abandoned by irresponsible breeders
• Shelters overwhelmed, under‑funded, and out of options
These animals are not “unwanted.”
They are victims of a system that desperately needs reform.
A better way exists
Countries like Germany have already shown that compassion can be written into law.
There, healthy shelter animals cannot be euthanised.
Animals are only put to sleep when they are suffering and no humane alternative exists.
Australia can do this too.
What we’re asking for
We call on the Australian Government and all State/Territory Governments to introduce laws that:
- Ban the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals
- Support shelters with proper resources
- Crack down on irresponsible and backyard breeding
- Promote adoption and responsible pet ownership
- Give every animal the time and chance they deserve
- These changes are realistic, humane, and urgently needed.
What decision‑makers can do right now
• Set national minimum standards for shelter euthanasia
• Fund desexing and microchipping programs
• Regulate high‑volume breeding more effectively
• Create partnerships between shelters, rescues, councils, and vets espcially in outback areas where resources are limited
• Build a national database to track shelter outcomes and improve transparency
These steps are practical — and they save lives.
What the community can do (because government can’t do it alone)
• Adopt instead of buying
• Desex pets to prevent unwanted litters
• Foster animals to free up shelter space
• Support local rescues through volunteering or donations
• Report irresponsible breeding
• Educate others about responsible pet ownership
Together, we can create a culture where every life is valued.
