This City Cabs film evidences safety and access issues with the Scottish Government funded Spaces for People design on George IV Bridge.
A taxi legally stops in a designated loading/unloading area, to assist a passenger using a wheelchair.
A business owner also legally unloads opposite - on a road layout which has been in place since summer 2020.
This leads to buses having no choice but to clip the traffic island.
This is in a city-centre street where ALL kerbside access has been removed for disabled people as well as businesses loading or unloading stock.
This now affects 40km of roads in Edinburgh and the council claims it is to improve safety.
In this Evening News article council officers try to blame everyone else for their own design and safety failings - bus drivers, cyclists, the taxi driver and business owner.
Labour councillor Karen Doran (covering for SNP councillor Lesley Macinnes who led the installation of this) once again shows her lack of understanding of issues impacting disabled people.
After watching the issues of wheelchair access, she says:
“The changes introduced on George IV Bridge have not only created a protected route for those travelling by bike into the city centre, but will provide extra space for people to walk and wheel safely once restrictions begin to be lifted in the near future."
The council is trying to make this permanent.
