The Issue

Dear Phish,

Please do not allow dynamic pricing for tickets to your shows.

You, as a band, and we, as a community, have always stood against ticket scalping. In the pre-Internet days, scalpers were heckled on lot. During the online era, our collective rejection of this insidious practice spawned a website, and then an app, dedicated to preserving face value tickets.

Now, you’re scalping your own tickets by allowing Ticketmaster to use dynamic pricing for Phish shows.

Dynamic pricing drives ticket prices through the roof, making Phish shows financially inaccessible to many fans. Within 10 minutes of an on-sale time, tickets triple or quadruple in price.

You’ve always embraced fairness and accessibility. After the Lowell 1995 show, you committed to keeping your shows apolitical, so as not to alienate fans whose leanings differed from yours. You held your millennial New Year’s show at Cypress so that there could be no shut-outs. In recent years, you’ve instated the first entry system to ensure that all fans have an equal shot at a prime spot on the rail.

Many bands now charge exorbitant face value prices for their tickets. You’ve pointedly not followed suit, keeping Phish ticket prices at levels most fans can afford.

Dynamic ticket pricing runs counter to these ideals of fairness and inclusion. It spikes ticket values so that they’re out of reach for many dedicated fans and lines the pockets of the companies monopolizing the ticket industry. You derive financial benefit from dynamic pricing as well. Does that monetary gain align with your values? Does it demonstrate the gratitude to and symbiotic relationship with the community that you often tout in interviews?

We the undersigned ask you to stop allowing dynamic pricing for Phish shows. Let’s keep Phish tickets fairly priced and accessible to all fans.
