Stop Dressage as an Olympic Event and Denounce it as a Sport
The Issue
From a personal perspective, I strongly believe we need to reconsider how we treat horses in sports, particularly in dressage. Horses are intelligent, sentient beings, deserving of our respect and empathy. Just as humans wouldn't walk on all fours in daily life, we shouldn't expect horses to perform unnatural movements like 'skipping' and 'ballet dancing' in the name of sport. Dressage, unfortunately, often does just that. I passionately believe that we must halt such practices, but my personal conviction is not alone.
In fact, according to a survey by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a significant number of people share my concern about the treatment of horses in sports including dressage. Dressage commands horses to perform movements diverse from their natural behaviours, often leading to physical strain and mental distress. This, unfortunately, is accepted in the name of sport, particularly within the context of the Olympics where dressage is hailed as a traditional discipline.
In light of the aforementioned facts, I urge for an immediate reevaluation of dressage as a sport, starting with its exclusion from the Olympics. Let's prioritise the well-being of these sentient beings over transient moments of human entertainment. Together, we can elevate the treatment of horses within sporting disciplines. I call upon everyone to support and sign this petition to ban dressage from the Olympics and from being recognised as a sport.
