Stop dolphin deaths & exploitation at Dolphinaris
The Issue
For more than 30 years the captivity industry in Mexico has deceived us with their false claims and marketing. During these years they have ignored the scientific facts about the animals they are exploiting. It is time we demand they acknowledge the complexities, emotions and intelligence of the dolphins in their captive tanks.
The Problem:
In early 2019, Empty the Tanks received drone footage from an anonymous source which shows video of the Dolphinaris Riviera Maya facility on three different dates. The first video is from December 12, 2018, and we can see the entire Dolphinaris facility and no baby dolphin is present. In the second video on January 27, 2019, a baby dolphin is visible swimming beside his/her mother in a very small back pool. The 3rd and final installment of the drone footage was taken on February 2, 2019 and the baby is now gone and the back pool is empty.

Whistleblowers have also come forward with information about numerous dolphin deaths at various Dolphinaris locations throughout Mexico. Dolphin Freedom, an organization that advocates to end dolphin & whale captivity reported that:
“The 5 deaths which occurred in Mexico in the past 19 months have taken place in two installations. Three deaths occurring in the Riviera Maya tanks and two dolphin deaths in the Cozumel facility. According to the group of informants involved with Dolphinaris, even more deaths have taken place.”

Informants also tipped Dolphin Freedom off to another dolphin death that occurred on March 5, 2019. Plato was a wild caught dolphin from the Solomon Islands and he lived at the Barcelo Maya Grand Hotel. An Empty the Tanks source has alleged that the dolphins in the tanks at Barcelo Maya were aggressively fighting the night before Plato died and his death was attributed to that. Empty the Tanks cannot confirm this claim and Dolphinaris has refused to comment.
These reports from whistleblowers combined with the drone footage shows a significant problem in the Mexico dolphin captivity industry. Another source for Empty the Tanks, Yolanda Alanis, says that in Mexico, businesses such as Dolphinaris do not officially acknowledge or report the birth of dolphin calves until they are at least six months of age. We can only assume the reason for this is because so many calves do not survive infancy.
Dolphinaris has yet to respond to our requests for more information about the dead dolphins at their facilities.
Dolphinaris along with other members of the captivity industry tell the public that dolphins in tanks live longer, healthier lives when compared to their wild counterparts. This is untrue and we see it every time a young dolphin in a tank dies. The question is how many other baby dolphins have died in back tanks in Mexico without the public knowing about it?
Informants and sources have also divulged information that dolphins at Dolphinaris are dying from things such as ingestion of foreign objects and lung/respiratory infections. They have also alleged that dolphins at Dolphinaris suffer from skin and eye problems due to the high amounts of chemicals used in the tanks.
Our Demand
We are demanding that Dolphinaris release the information about the dolphins in their facilities, both alive and dead. We demand that they be transparent with their dolphin births, deaths, illnesses & injuries. The have hidden the truth from their paying customers, the citizens of Mexico, and the world for long enough. We must hold them accountable for the countless lives that have been lost in their tanks.
Empty the Tanks believes that Dolphinaris and all captive facilities in Mexico, need to cease their captive breeding programs and stop all swim with dolphin programs.
We are also demanding that PROFEPA, Mexico’s environmental agency in charge of overseeing dolphinariums, do a full investigation into the dolphin deaths at Dolphinaris. PROFEPA has a history of not fully investigating dolphin deaths in Mexico and we are asking that they also be held accountable for lack of proper oversight at Dolphinaris.

Durante estos años, han ignorado los hechos científicos sobre los animales que están explotando. Es hora de exigir que reconozcan las complejidades, las emociones y la inteligencia de los delfines que ahora están en sus pequeños tanques en cautiverio.
El problema:
A principios de 2019, Empty the Tanks recibió imágenes de un dron de una fuente anónima que muestra el video de las instalaciones de Dolphinaris Riviera Maya en tres fechas diferentes. El primer video es del 12 de diciembre de 2018, en donde podemos ver toda la instalación de Dolphinaris y no hay ningún delfín bebé presente. En el segundo video, el 27 de enero de 2019, se ve un delfín bebé nadando junto a su madre en una piscina muy pequeña. La tercera y última entrega de las imágenes del dron se tomó el 2 de febrero de 2019 y el bebé ya no está y la piscina trasera está vacía.

Otros informantes también han presentado información sobre numerosas muertes de delfines en varios lugares de Dolphinaris en México. Dolphin Freedom, una organización que aboga por poner fin al cautiverio de delfines y ballenas, informó que:
“Las 5 muertes ocurridas en México en los últimos 19 meses fueron en dos instalaciones. Tres muertes ocurrieron en los tanques de la Riviera Maya y dos muertes de delfines en las instalaciones de Cozumel. Según el grupo de informantes involucrados con Dolphinaris, más muertes han ocurrido ".

Los informantes también informaron a Dolphin Freedom acerca de la muerte de otro delfín que ocurrió el 5 de marzo de 2019. Plata fue un delfín capturado de su hábitat en las Islas Salomón y vivió en el Hotel Barceló Maya Grand. Una fuente de Empty The Tanks ha alegado que los delfines en los tanques de Barceló Maya estaban luchando agresivamente la noche anterior a la muerte de Plata y su muerte se atribuyó a eso. Empty the Tanks no puede confirmar esta reclamación y Dolphinaris se ha negado a comentar.
Esta información de los informantes, combinada con las imágenes del drone muestran un problema importante en la industria del cautiverio de delfines en México. Esto no es cierto y lo vemos cada vez que muere un delfín joven en un tanque. La pregunta es, ¿cuántos otros delfines bebés han muerto en tanques escondidos en México sin que el público lo sepa?
Los informantes y otras fuentes también han compartido información sobre el porque los delfines en Dolphinaris están muriendo y principalmente son: por la ingestión de objetos extraños e infecciones pulmonares / respiratorias. También han confirmado que los delfines en Dolphinaris sufren de problemas en la piel y ojos, debido a las altas cantidades de sustancias químicas utilizadas en los tanques de alberca.
¿Que queremos?
Estamos exigiendo que Dolphinaris comparta la información sobre los delfines en sus instalaciones, tanto vivos como muertos. Exigimos que sean transparentes con sus nacimientos, muertes, enfermedades y lesiones con delfines. Han ocultado la verdad a sus clientes, a los ciudadanos de México y al mundo durante el tiempo suficiente. Debemos hacerlos responsables por las innumerables vidas que se han perdido en sus tanques bajo su cuidado.
Empty the Tanks cree que Dolphinaris y todas las instalaciones de cautiverio en México deben terminar con sus programas de reproducción en cautiverio y detener todos los programas de nado con delfines.
También estamos exigiendo que PROFEPA, la agencia ambiental de México a cargo de la supervisión de los delfinarios, realice una investigación completa sobre las muertes de delfines en Dolphinaris. PROFEPA tiene un historial de no investigar las muertes de delfines en México y les pedimos que también sean responsables de la falta de supervisión adecuada en Dolphinaris.
