The Issue

In Detroit, local businesses have started enforcing policies that compel students to leave their backpacks at the door and only allow one student inside at a time. While these rules may appear to mitigate theft or crowding issues, they are actually discriminatory and unsafe. They unfairly target students, treating them as potential criminals rather than valued customers.

My own personal experience demonstrates the risks associated with this policy. While visiting the gas station on the corner of West McNichols and Wyoming, a common stop for many students after school, I complied with the request to leave my backpack at the front door. Upon returning, I discovered it had gone missing. When I asked an employee for assistance, I was met with a dismissive shrug and was told they were in the back so they didn't know, with no real effort to help recover it.

This sense of helplessness and disrespect is not an isolated incident. Such policies not only violate the trust young customers should be able to have in local businesses but also compromise their security by exposing personal belongings to theft.

Moreover, these rules are not applied uniformly across non-student customers, reflecting a bias that cultivates inequality. Detroit students deserve better than to be singled out and surveilled under the guise of safety precautions.

Instead of enforcing such ineffective policies, local businesses should explore respectful and mindful approaches that secure their premises without compromising the dignity and rights of their young patrons. Implementing surveillance systems to monitor store premises, engaging in positive community interactions, and offering secure storage options inside the stores are just a few alternatives that can replace the current discriminatory practices.

I urge our local businesses to dismantle these unfair backpack policies and adopt strategies that respect and protect all customers equally, fostering a community environment where students feel welcome and secure.
