Stop Discrimination Against Dog Breeds in Insurance Policies and Rental Properties

The Issue

Dear , Members of Parliament or Congress.

We, the undersigned, are concerned about the unfair and discriminatory practices that many insurance companies and rental property owners engage in when it comes to dog breeds. We believe that all dogs, regardless of breed, should be treated fairly and judged on an individual basis rather than being subjected to blanket policies based on stereotypes.

It is disheartening to witness the countless incidents where responsible dog owners are denied insurance coverage or face difficulties finding rental properties simply because of the breed of their beloved canine companions. These discriminatory practices not only affect families and individuals seeking affordable housing but also perpetuate negative stereotypes and stigmatize certain breeds.

We understand the importance of insurance policies and rental agreements that prioritize safety and mitigate potential risks associated with dog ownership. However, we believe that the focus should shift towards responsible pet ownership, proper training, and individual assessments of dogs' behavior and temperament, rather than discriminating based on breed.

We, the signatories of this petition, call for the following changes to be implemented:

Insurance Companies:

a. Eliminate breed-specific restrictions in homeowners and renters insurance policies.

b. Adopt a comprehensive risk assessment approach that considers individual dog behavior, training, and responsible ownership.

c. Encourage dog owners to provide evidence of responsible pet ownership, including training certificates, behavior evaluations, and veterinary records.

Rental Property Owners and Managers:

 a. End breed-specific restrictions and bans in rental agreements.

b. Implement comprehensive pet policies that focus on responsible pet ownership, including dog training certifications, references from previous landlords, and proof of vaccinations.
By making these changes, insurance companies and rental property owners can foster a more inclusive and fair environment that acknowledges responsible dog ownership practices and individual dog behavior.

We believe that every dog, regardless of its breed, has the potential to be a well-behaved and cherished member of a family or community. It is time to move away from breed discrimination and embrace a more compassionate and informed approach.

We kindly request your support in making this necessary change by signing and sharing this petition widely. Together, we can challenge breed discrimination and promote fair treatment for all dogs.
