Subject: Objection to Development Proposal Adjacent to Millennium Woods and Heatherton Pond (Moorway Lane)
I am writing to formally object to the proposed development of 335 homes on the green wedge land off Moorway Lane, adjacent to Millennium Woods and Heatherton Pond.
These spaces are not just green fields—they are the result of thoughtful planning and community care. Heatherton Pond was created in 1998 as part of a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) to manage stormwater from the Heatherton housing development. Over time, it has evolved into a haven for biodiversity, with ongoing habitat improvements supported by Derby City Council and local angling groups. It plays a vital role in flood prevention, wildlife conservation, and community wellbeing.
Millennium Woods was planted in the year 2000 to mark the turn of the millennium, with many trees sponsored by local families to celebrate the birth of children that year. It has since grown into a cherished woodland, now designated as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS) due to its mosaic of habitats including woodland, grassland, hedgerows, ponds, and a community orchard. These spaces were gifted and cultivated with long-term stewardship in mind—not to be surrounded or overshadowed by urban sprawl.
In addition to the environmental concerns, I am deeply worried about the significant traffic impact this development would have on the area. Moorway Lane, Blagreaves Lane, and surrounding roads already experience severe congestion, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times at Derby Moor Spencer Academy. Hundreds of students commute daily, and the volume of cars, buses, and pedestrians creates regular gridlock, with long queues and delays that stretch well beyond peak hours.
he addition of 335 homes would introduce hundreds more vehicles to this already strained network, increasing the risk of accidents, reducing air quality, and making the area less safe for children and families. The school run is already a source of frustration and concern for many residents, and this proposal would only intensify those pressures.
Furthermore, the developer’s survey does not allow for dissenting views, failing to reflect genuine community concerns. This lack of balanced consultation is deeply troubling.
I urge the Council to protect these spaces and prioritise sustainable, community-led planning. Please keep me informed of future developments and opportunities to contribute.
Yours faithfully,
