Living in Birmingham, I have always cherished the serene escape provided by our local nature reserve, nestled at the edgbaston reservoir. It's not just a piece of land or body of water; it's our biggest sanctuary in the city, a vital green space where the daily humdrum of city life momentarily fades away. For many, including myself, this place is a refuge for mental health, offering solace through tranquil walks amongst nature.

The resovoir is more than just a scenic spot; it’s a lifeline for countless residents in our busy, industrial city. It serves as a crucial breathing space, combating the urban congestion and pollution we contend with every day. We are aware of the dire need for housing, yet, building 90 houses or flats on this cherished land is not the solution. The loss of this green space will have a detrimental impact on the community's well-being and further exacerbate the congestion and environmental strain on our city.

Instead, I urge the council to consider alternative locations for housing development that do not sacrifice essential green spaces like our reservoir. We need to preserve this area, not just for our enjoyment but for the ecological balance it provides, supporting local wildlife and promoting environmental sustainability.

We must act now to prevent the irreversible damage to our precious nature reserve. Your support is crucial in making the council understand the devastating impact this development would have on our community. Update (28 July 2026):

More than 150 local people attended the community consultation meeting on 13 July 2026 with Keon Housing, the private housing developer behind the proposed scheme.

The meeting was met with significant opposition from local residents. Many people took the time to complete feedback forms and submit suggestions to Keon. However, many have received no response and have had no meaningful engagement or conversation with the developer. Instead, residents have been left feeling ignored and unheard.

Despite this, Keon has now submitted its planning application (updated 28 July). We are concerned that it may have been submitted with little or no meaningful changes resulting from the community consultation. Many residents feel the consultation process was rushed, leaving people confused, frustrated, and excluded from decisions that will affect their local area.

The Council needs to recognise how much this reservoir and the continuum tower ballroom site means to the people.an important respite from Birmingham's industrial heritage For over 150 years, this site has been , providing a place for leisure, recreation, and people to connect with nature. It is not only a valued natural space . It represents a unique part of Birmingham’s social and cultural heritage that should be protected for future Generations

We want future generations to continue enjoying both the wildlife and the strong sense of community that this special place provides.

No to housing development. Make our green space greener No to privatisation. Tower to the people. The people's reservoir. Your reservoir.This is more than a development site. It is 200 years of Birmingham's history, nature and community. Let's protect it together.

If this housing development goes ahead, who knows which part of the reservoir could be sold next? This has to stop.
