Stop development north of Nimbin , NSW, save the Calico and Mulgum Creeks area
Problem
Stop the vote by the Lismore Council by sharing and signing the petition ,GET AS MANY AS YOU CAN TO SIGN This change from rural to residential land developments along Calico Creek and Mulgum Creek will be disastrous for our community ,Land north of Nimbin, NSW. Presently some 800 acres are either pending or proposed to be cut up. The rezoning is a precedent and it will allow many more hundreds of acres to be rezoned. Dangerous insecticides, herbicides plastics, phosphorous will run-off from the housing into one of the main tributaries, namely Calico Creek, of the Wilson's ( nee Richmond River ) Valuable agricultural production and land will be lost to housing. Beautiful scenery picturesque for future generations will be lost. Potential eco-tourism will be lost. Traditional water holes for the birthing of Bungjalung babies will be lost; Indigenous heritage lost.
If people want to complain about the proposed developments in the Nimbin area , you have three avenues

Wildlife, such as Water Dragons, Black Cockatoos .Possums Platypus, Rainforest frogs, Rainforest Bandicoots, Kingfishers , Small Marsupials etc some rare will be threatened with loss of habitat, as runoff from pollutants across basalt bedrock is certain to effect the area. The land and its heritage should be protected. Tourism and eco- tourism can be better directed towards our unique natural environment, intended to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife..
Nimbin has only around 450 permanent residents.
Solution
The Lismore City Council or the NSW State Government can stop this development. Instead build a 'Centre for the Environment' This can be constructed just past NImbin's 50 k mph zone, establishing an educational centre ( such as the one in Mossman Gorge ) for tourists locals alike too learn and then explore the uniqueness of the area. Walk ways such as in Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rain Forest Walk and various walks in Tasmania etc could be built adding to the eco-tourism. Local people ( both indigenous and non indigenous ) can be employed to drive buses to and from sites such as Nimbin Rocks or Three Tree Hill , Protester Falls ,Minyon Falls and then give tours on how indigenous people lived for thousands of years . Just to show them the full beauty of the Nimbin area would keep people in the area of days. Our good agricultural land and its heritage should not be sold off. Nimbin has a very high unemployment level , a project like this would benefit all in the community and protect our resources . Tourists would be encouraged to stay for longer, local artists can display their wares The community can grow.
