Many of you will have seen the recent media coverage about the Eruini Street development.
Let’s be clear — the signs on Eruini Street aren’t nasty or abusive. They simply share valid concerns about a project that doesn’t fit with the character, infrastructure, or coastal environment of Waikanae Beach.
It’s frustrating to hear suggestions otherwise. People have been respectful, but yes — emotions are running high. That’s what happens when over 1,200 people care enough to sign a petition and when neighbours have asked for engagement from the developer since day one but got nothing before the non-notified consent was lodged.
This isn’t about stopping housing or change — it’s about getting development that works for the community, protects sun and privacy, and deals with infrastructure and flood risks.
We are at a critical moment. Please keep talking about this, sharing the petition, and showing support for those directly affected. The more voices, the harder we are to ignore.
Are you local to attend a meeting? The next Waikanae Community Board meeting is on September 2nd, 6.30pm, Te Horo Hall. Join us!
