The Issue

I moved to Florida with the dream of experiencing the unique charm and natural beauty that embodies "Old Florida." The pristine beaches, lush wetlands, and the myriad of wildlife create an unparalleled landscape that attracted me and many others to this vibrant state. But over the years, relentless development has been gnawing away at these treasures.

In recent times, sprawling urbanization has become synonymous with environmental degradation here. Florida saw a surge in population growth, being home to nearly 22 million residents today, which has triggered an array of development projects. Unfortunately, these projects often prioritize cement and profit over conservation.

The wetlands, a crucial natural resource, are being drained and paved for new housing complexes. Critical habitats for wildlife such as manatees, alligators, and various bird species are being destroyed in the name of progress. The starkest example is the alarming decrease in the manatee population, with reports indicating a steep decline due to loss of habitat and water pollution.

Moreover, with more concrete comes more traffic, more pollution, and a loss of the serene landscapes that generations of Floridians have treasured. It is crucial to rethink our approach and adopt sustainable practices that align development with environmental protection.

I propose re-evaluating current development plans with an emphasis on conservation. Projects should include comprehensive environmental assessments to mitigate ecological damage. There must be efforts to preserve existing wildlife corridors, protect our waterways from pollution, and promote green spaces that enhance community well-being.

We are calling on state legislators, city planners, and local authorities to uphold the sustainability and beauty of Old Florida by implementing stringent regulations and incentives for eco-friendly development.

Your support is vital to ensuring that Florida's treasures are preserved for future generations. Please sign this petition to demand responsible development and protect the natural beauty we all cherish.
