STOP Deposit Return Scheme For The UK!
The Issue
I am a Irish expat living in the UK who has experience with the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) and I can safely tell you it is miserable to deal with it.
Groups such as "Keep Britain Tidy" advocate for this what they don't tell you is the Downsides!
Here are several reasons why it shouldn't be in the UK
1. Over 66 Million Euro has been lost. https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0808/1527608-deposit-return-scheme/ This Source cites that even if you would implement the DRS Millions of Bottles and cans will be lost in landfills, and flytippers tipping, etc Think about how many Millions even Billions of Pounds that may be lost because of this!
2. People Ravaging through bins just to find bottles/cans. https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/0629/1580767-return-bins-dublin/ This Is another issue I believe will make DRS just a inconvenient as people will ravage and destroy bins to find bottles making the clean up. just about the same as before. Even when Dublin City Installed bottle holders the problem still persists!
In the source RTE asked Mr. Bogucianskas said "It's not easy. There're more pickers than bins. I'm usually looking from the top and if I see, I'll pick the can. I won't dive into bins,"
3. The DRS has allowed Huge Price hikes of everyone's favourite fizzy drinks. which you would think would be a good thing. but water has also increased. which is just awful!

This images shows us a water bottle for sale in Dublin for €3.55 + 25c which is roughly £2.98 + 21p. In total that's £3.19 for a bottle, which mind you. this isn't even a airport and in that shop there was no other choice of brand that sold regular water in that store.
4.
N/A ill write later, please just read this https://www.irishtimes.com/environment/2026/08/10/a-complete-failure-or-a-great-thing-readers-have-their-say-on-the-deposit-return-scheme/
