Stop DepEd ORDER No. 86, 2010, Philippines
The Issue
DepEd ORDER No. 86, s. 2010 PROHIBITING STUDENTS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ELEMENTARYAND SECONDARY SCHOOLS FROM GOING TO COMPUTER SHOPS, MALLS, THEATERS, AND THE LIKES DURING THEIR CLASS HOURS
I'm a 10th-grade international student from China studying at a private school in Manila. I don't have guardians or parents. Our school dismisses at 12NN. I rent an apartment near SM Manila (only 50M away). Often, I go to SM Manila for lunch and return to the apartment for a nap. However, recently I have encountered unpleasant incidents multiple times. The security at SM Manila prohibits me from entering and asks me to leave to eat outside, saying, "Students below 10th grade are not allowed." I am very angry. I thought this was an issue with SM, so I reported it to them. They told me I must comply with DepEd Act 86, which prohibits students below 10th grade from entering, and even asked me to enter SM after 5 PM. Isn't this discriminatory against students below 10th grade wearing school uniforms? This is an unjust and pointless law that restricts students' freedom. I hope everyone can sign to express dissatisfaction with the Philippine government and DepEd.
